Kokorako house, Honiara

by Russ Grayson last modified 31-07-2007 18:07

The kokorako (kokorako is Solomon Islands pijin for 'chicken') house has been made of local materials - bamboo for walls and palm leaf for roof. It contains three rooms for chickens of different ages. The kokorako house has crushed coral floors as well as roosts and nesting boxes. Approximately thirty birds are housed. The building is the type recommended by the Kastom Gaden Association's (KGA) kokorako project. Location: White River (Honiara) home of Australian permaculture-trained program manager, Tony Jansen. Photo by Russ Grayson, who is associated with Tony and the KGA.
