Becoming an APT Trainer/Assessor

Document Actions
Information on the steps to becoming an accredited APT trainer/assessor.

Accredited Permaculture Training (APT™) operates under the Australian Quality Training Framework (AQTF). There are nationally agreed standards for all accredited training. The Accredited Permaculture Training was developed by a group of experienced permaculture practitioners operating as a National Industry Reference Group.

Permaculture International Limited owns the copyright of the material in order to ensure its integrity. PIL is a member based organisation and so APT belongs to its membership of permaculturists. The process is administered by two Registered Training Organisation who keep records that are AQTF compliant. AQTF auditors oversee work of the RTO. Every effort has been made to ensure the integrity of permaculture ethics and principles within the training, as well as in the process for registering teachers and maintaining consistent quality of APT.

The Application Process of registering teachers for APT was initially delegated by PIL to the Victorian Educators Group (VEG) of Permaculture Melbourne Inc. It is now administered under PIL by Claire Everett.

 PIL Membership

To become a member of PIL visit our website at www.permacultureinternational.org  and click ‘join’ on the homepage. You can only become a full member if you have completed a PDC. Associate membership for non PDC holders is also available, but will not allow membership in the ATR or confer voting rights in PIL.

Certificate IV AWT/TAA

The Certificate IV in Assessment and Workplace Training has been the required qualification for training under the AQTF until recently when it was replaced by the Certificate IV in Training And Assessment. It is available at most TAFEs, but permaculture teachers Robin Clayfield, Janet Millington and Virginia Solomon have also developed a dynamic version for permaculturalists which includes the Course Orientation Workshop (COW). Trainer/Assessors holding a Cert IV in AWT before 2008 may use this qualification until further notice by AQTF. All others will need new TAA Cert IV.

Email Janet Millington at miltech@bigpond.com or Robin Clayfield at robin@earthcare.com or Virginia at vsolomon@netspace.net.au for details about their combined COW/TAA courses.

Course Orientation Workshop (COW)

The APT COW provides essential knowledge and skills of delivery and assessment methods particular to APT. It is provided by PIL as a way to make sure all APT trainers deliver APT in a way which reflects permaculture ethics and principles.

Email Virginia Solomon at vsolomon@netspace.net.au or Robyn Francis at robyn@permaculture.com.au for COW dates and locations.

Note: The COW can be delivered on its own or as part of TAA training.

To join the Approved Teachers Register (ATR) you need...

To join the ATR ensure the above APT trainer requirements are covered and download the ATR Application Form by clicking here

To submit your ATR application you will need:

  • three references from permaculturists attesting to your background in permaculture. One of these references must be from a permaculturist currently on the ATR or on the PIL Board or a member of a PIL subcommitttee.
  • a current cv.
  • a non-refundable application fee of $100.
  • a completed application form.

ATR applications are now being assessed during PIL Course Orientation Workshops by the Trainer/Assessors delivering the course. By bringing documented evidence for all of the requirements listed in the above two sections you can gain membership to the ATR and become an APT Trainer/Assessor at a "one stop shop" during your COW.

If you are not applying at a COW, please email Claire Coleman, Registrar, APT (Approved Teacher Register) at lwpf@yahoo.co.uk  for details on submitting your ATR application and paying the fee if you are not doing it at a COW.
